Jason Gillespie has stepped down from his position as Pakistan men's cricket team's red-ball head coach. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced Aaqib Javed as the interim red-ball head coach following Gillespie's resignation.
According to PCB, Aaqib Javed’s first assignment in this role will be the two-match Test series against South Africa, part of the ongoing all-format tour. The first Test is scheduled to take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion from December 26 to December 30, while the second Test will be held at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town from January 3 to January 7.
Jason Gillespie’s decision to resign reportedly stems from his refusal to travel to South Africa. Sources reveal that Gillespie informed the board about personal reasons for his inability to join the team. Additionally, it is believed that his dissatisfaction with the non-renewal of Tim Nielsen’s contract also influenced his decision.
Gillespie was originally expected to arrive in South Africa yesterday to oversee the pre-Test training camp. However, his abrupt decision has led the PCB to make swift adjustments.
The Pakistan cricket team is currently in South Africa, where they are engaged in a three-match T20I series. Following the T20Is, the teams will compete in a three-match ODI series before the highly anticipated Test matches begin.
Aaqib Javed’s appointment as interim head coach aims to ensure continuity and stability for the red-ball team as they prepare for the challenging Test series against a formidable South African side.
Further updates on the appointment of a permanent head coach are expected after the South Africa tour.
