The wait is finally over as the West Indies cricket team is set to play their first Test match in Pakistan in nearly two decades tomorrow. The much-anticipated two-match Test series begins tomorrow, January 17, at the Multan Cricket Stadium, with the second Test scheduled to start on January 25. This historic series marks an exciting moment for cricket fans, as Pakistan and the West Indies lock horns to conclude their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and set the tone for future campaigns.
For Pakistan, this series carries significant importance. Ranked 7th in the ICC Test rankings and 8th in the current WTC standings, they aim to secure a series victory on home soil to improve their position and build momentum for the next cycle. Meanwhile, the West Indies, just one spot behind Pakistan in the rankings, will be eager to prove themselves and climb the ladder in the longest format of the game.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood emphasized the value of playing Test matches at home. Speaking at a press conference in Multan, he said, “Test cricket is a different format with its own challenges and requirements. Our desire is to play more Test matches and to continue showcasing our skills in this format.” He acknowledged the challenges that come with the gaps between Test matches but expressed the team’s commitment to excelling in this demanding format.
The last Test series between these two teams was a thrilling affair. Played in the West Indies, the series ended in a 1-1 draw. West Indies narrowly clinched the first Test by one wicket in a nail-biting finish, while Pakistan bounced back to win the second Test by 109 runs.
