Afghanistan's win marks end of David Warner's international career

David Warner's 15-year international career ended quietly when Afghanistan's win over Bangladesh in St Vincent on Monday night eliminated Australia from the T20 World Cup during the Super Eight phase.

Warner, unsure if this was his final game for Australia, had a subdued exit in St Lucia.

Warner played his last ODI in November's World Cup final win over India, his final Test in January against Pakistan, and had indicated this T20 World Cup would be his last tournament. He left the door open for a potential return for next year's Champions Trophy, though it's unlikely.

His final appearance was disappointing, scoring six runs before being caught by Suryakumar Yadav off Arshdeep Singh. Warner walked off with his head bowed, with no fanfare or standing ovation.

After the game, he chatted with Virat Kohli on the outfield. Josh Hazlewood mentioned that the timing of Warner’s send-off depended on the Afghanistan-Bangladesh game result. Hazlewood praised Warner’s career, noting his absence will be felt on and off the field.

Travis Head expressed disappointment at the prospect of Warner's career ending this way, emphasizing Warner’s significant contributions to Australian cricket.

Hazlewood also mentioned the potential for changes ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, acknowledging a likely gradual transition rather than a complete overhaul, with many current players still active in franchise cricket.
