Asad Shafiq opens up on working with Mohammad Yousaf at NHPC camp

Pakistan’s cricketer Asad Shafiq, while talking in a PCB Podcast on Friday, opened up on working with legendary former batsman Mohammad Yousaf during the National High Performance Center camp in Lahore, where the latter is currently working as the batting coach.

The 35-year-old revealed that he was working on certain things pointed out by Yousaf and was hopeful that the camp would be beneficial to his performances in the future.

“The camp has been great. We couldn’t practice a lot in Karachi due to the coronavirus. Our training was going on but we couldn’t get a lot of batting practice in. This is a great opportunity for me because I am getting proper batting practice here. I had worked with [Mohammad] Yousaf bhai during the season and I have now been working with him since the day I arrived. The first two or three days were spent on practice, both indoor and outdoor. I also played practice matches. He has told me a lot of things and we agreed on certain things such as batting techniques which I have been trying to work on. I hope I can utilise this time to its fullest and I can implement the things I have learned in our upcoming domestic season and come forward as a better batsman,” Shafiq said.

“We are getting a lot of quality practice here because of the facilities. We have video analysts here who keep an eye on our nets session and we sit down later and see if we were implementing what we learned or were trying to accomplish. This also helps us identify our mistakes. These facilities are great,” he added.

The right-handed batsman stated that he was working on two specific things which could help him in the future.

“I have always benefited from camps such as these. Yousaf bhai pointed out two or three things, while I was playing in the domestic season, which I agreed with. The first was that my body was a bit open while playing the back of a length ball and outswing. We are working on it so that my body isn't open but side on. I have also been working on my trigger movement because I move a little at the release point of the ball. Yousaf bhai has made me wait a little so that I don’t move until the bowler releases the ball. These are two basic points I have to work on,” he concluded.
