In the wake of Pakistan's exit from the Asia Cup 2023 following a defeat by Sri Lanka on Thursday, skipper, Babar Azam, revealed key areas of concern that need to be addressed before the upcoming 2023 World Cup scheduled in India.
The critical match, held at the R.Premadasa Stadium, saw Sri Lanka emerging victorious by a narrow margin of two wickets.
During the post-match conference. reflecting on their performance in the Asia Cup, Babar acknowledged several shortcomings that demand attention and rectification.
"We made a lot of mistakes in this tournament, which we'll have a discussion about. Our fielding today was also not up to the mark. In bowling, we have a bit of an issue with our middle overs. Overall, our preparation [for the World Cup] is good, but we will work on our shortcomings and learn from our mistakes," Babar said.
The 28-year-old specifically highlighted the bowling aspect, shedding light on Shadab Khan's performance.
He acknowledged Shadab's effective bowling but expressed concern over the lack of wickets.
"Shadab is bowling very well, but he's unfortunately not taking wickets, so that's why you feel he isn't bowling well. These are our best bowlers - Shadab and Nawaz," he concluded.
Kusal Mendis' 91 and an unbeaten 49 by Charith Asalanka helped Sri Lanka edge out Pakistan by two wickets in a last-ball thriller of the Asia Cup to set up a final clash with India.
Chasing a DLS revised target of 252 in the 42-overs-a-side contest in Colombo, Sri Lanka needed eight from the final over and achieved the target with Asalanka's winning hit on the last ball.
