Batting is my primary role but I’m improving my English as well: Babar Azam

Pakistan’s limited-overs captain Babar Azam has said that his primary role in the side is batting but he is also keen on improving his English.

It must be noted that former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed, on Saturday, in a YouTube video, said that Babar needs to improve his personality and command over the English language as he will be required to communicate often with the media as the captain of the Pakistan team.

“Batting is my primary role and I’m focused on that but I’m also working on improving my English,” said Babar, while responding to a question on Tanvir’s statement, during a teleconference.

The prolific right-handed batsman, who was recently named Pakistan’s ODI captain, was also optimistic about the team’s future in limited-overs formats.

“It is an honour for me to captain Pakistan in ODIs as well,” he said. “I take advice from Misbah bhai and senior players with regards to captaincy. It is not easy to lead Pakistan side but I will try my best to ensure the team produces good results in ODI and T20I cricket.”

“I believe in attacking captaincy like Imran Khan,” he added.

The Lahore-born also urged people to stop comparing him with India’s star batsman and captain, Virat Kohli.

“Don’t compare me with Virat Kohli because he is a player of different class,” he said. “I try to perform well in my own way.”

Speaking about the ICC T20 World Cup, later this year in Australia, Babar said that the cricket’s governing body will take the final decision keeping in mind the effects of Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

“The decision about T20 World Cup will be taken by ICC. I’m sure they will take into account the health and safety of players before making a decision,” he said. “I want to participate in the event as Pakistan’s captain.”

The 25-year-old also talked about the challenging England tour while ruing the fact that matches will be played behind closed doors.

“Touring England won’t be easy. Health and safety of players is of great importance and the tour will only be possible when proper arrangements are in place,” he said. “Both England and Pakistan team fans, along with the cricketers, are missing cricket because of the pandemic.”

“We will still try to perform to the best of our ability despite no support from the fans in the stadium,” he added.
