Australia has called up Tasmanian allrounder Beau Webster to their squad for the second Border-Gavaskar Test in Adelaide, starting December 6, as doubts linger over Mitchell Marsh’s fitness. Marsh, who bowled 17 overs in the series opener in Perth—the most in a Test for him in three years—has been dealing with soreness following Australia's 295-run defeat to India.

Head coach Andrew McDonald had initially stated that the hosts would retain their 13-man squad for the day-night Test. However, with Marsh potentially limited to a batting role, Webster’s inclusion offers a versatile option to ease the workload on Australia's frontline bowlers, particularly with the third Test in Brisbane beginning just four days after the Adelaide clash.

Webster’s maiden international call-up comes on the back of impressive performances in domestic cricket. Last season, the 29-year-old achieved a rare milestone in the Sheffield Shield, amassing over 900 runs and taking 30 wickets—a feat only previously achieved by Sir Garfield Sobers. This season, Webster has continued his fine form with 448 runs at an average of 56 and 16 wickets in first-class cricket, including standout performances against India A.

Reflecting on his selection, Webster said, “To get runs and wickets against a strong Indian side was pleasing. Playing ‘A’ cricket is one step below Test level, so it holds you in good stead. Getting the call from George Bailey after the NSW game was a really proud moment, and I’m excited to contribute in any way I can.”

Marsh’s potential role as a pure batter in Adelaide raises questions about Australia's bowling combination. While Marsh’s fitness status is being monitored, Webster provides an all-round option, adding depth to the squad.
