Champions Cup: Here’s why Saim Ayub gave his man of the match award to Mohammad Hasnain

Panthers’ all-rounder Saim Ayub gave his man of the match award to teammate Mohammad Hasnain after their dominant seven-wicket victory over the Markhors in the Champions One-Day Cup Qualifier 1 on Tuesday.

The Markhors won the toss and chose to bat first, but their decision backfired as they struggled against the Panthers' formidable bowling attack. The team’s top order collapsed, losing four wickets for just 25 runs, and were eventually bowled out for a meager 137 runs.

Saim Ayub was the standout bowler for the Panthers, taking five wickets in a brilliant spell, while Mohammad Hasnain provided crucial support by claiming three key wickets with the new ball. Their combined efforts left the Markhors with no chance of posting a competitive total.

In response, the Panthers chased down the 138-run target comfortably, reaching it in the 24th over with seven wickets in hand. Usman Khan top-scored with 54* runs, supported by Umar Siddiq’s 35 and Saim Ayub’s solid contribution of 33 runs.

For his exceptional bowling, Saim Ayub was named man of the match. However, in a selfless gesture, Ayub handed the award to Hasnain, crediting him for setting up the game with his early breakthroughs.

"I believe this award belongs to Hasnain. His brilliant opening spell with the new ball, which resulted in quick wickets, laid the foundation for our victory. It was because of his efforts that I was able to take wickets later on," Ayub stated during the post-match presentation.

With this win, the Panthers secured their place in the Champions Cup final. Meanwhile, the Markhors will have another chance to make it through, facing the winner of Wednesday's Eliminator 1 match between the Stallions and Lions in Eliminator 2.
