Despite the return of England's regular skipper Jos Buttler following a calf injury, England's in-form batter Phil Salt has been confirmed to continue as wicketkeeper for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies. Buttler, who has been recovering from his injury, missed the recent limited-overs series against Australia, during which England managed to level the T20Is and faced a narrow ODI series loss.
In Buttler's absence, Phil Salt and Harry Brook led the T20I and ODI squads, respectively, showcasing England's depth. Reflecting on his wicketkeeping role, Salt admitted that keeping wickets for England is not something he has done frequently but emphasized his eagerness to take on the responsibility. "It’s not something I’ve done a lot for England recently, but I enjoy keeping. I feel like that’s where I offer the most to the side," Salt told ESPNcricinfo.
So far, Salt has donned the gloves in 13 of his 59 appearances for England across formats, gaining more opportunities to keep wicket during the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies. Currently, the ODI series stands level at 1-1, with the third and deciding match set for Wednesday at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.
Buttler, 34, has resumed training at Kensington Oval and will take over as captain for the five-match T20I series beginning on November 9. This series marks Buttler’s comeback since England’s semi-final defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
Phil Salt has made a notable impact in the ODI series so far, amassing 77 runs across two matches at a strike rate of 87.50. With England aiming to secure the ODI series and prepare for the T20Is, Salt's dual role as keeper and batter will be key.
The first two T20Is will be hosted at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown on November 9 and 10, while the series will conclude with three matches at Beausejour Stadium in St Lucia on November 14, 16, and 17.
