Fakhar Zaman refutes criticizing PCB after being dropped from national squad

Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has clarified that his recent tweet supporting captain Babar Azam was not meant as criticism of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The left-handed batter faced backlash and was left out of the PCB’s central contracts list for the 2024-25 season.

Fakhar’s tweet, posted days before the squad announcement for the England Test series, showed support for Babar amidst criticism from journalists and former players. Some reports linked the tweet to his exclusion from tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

Speaking to a private media outlet, Fakhar said, “I did think later it would have been better if I hadn’t posted the tweet. But people misunderstood it as criticism of the board’s decision, which is 100% wrong.” He explained that the tweet was directed at those calling for Babar’s removal from the squad, not at the PCB.

“I tweeted before the team announcement—about three days earlier. I saw some journalists and ex-players saying Babar should be dropped. I felt they were disregarding his contributions, so I responded. It wasn’t a criticism of the board,” he clarified.

Fakhar also addressed fitness concerns, revealing he had requested a two-month rest after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

“I wasn’t aware of my condition when the team was leaving for Australia. Later, I found out I was suffering from hyperthyroidism. I’m thankful I didn’t travel with the team because you can’t perform in such a condition,” he said.

Chief Selector Naqvi had previously stated that Fakhar’s fitness issues, along with his tweet, were factors in his exclusion. “The fitness test and a pending show-cause notice were the main reasons for not including him in the central contracts list,” Naqvi explained.

Interim white-ball coach Aaqib Javed also commented on Fakhar’s absence, highlighting his fitness problems. “Fakhar is a match-winner; he has performed for Pakistan for many years. We are in communication with him. Once he regains fitness, the selection committee will definitely consider him,” Aaqib said.

Fakhar Zaman’s last appearance for Pakistan was during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Fans are hopeful to see the star opener back in action once he overcomes his fitness challenges.
