For media rights deal: PCB still awaits government response

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is still waiting to receive a green signal from the federal government to allow entertainment channels to take part in media rights tender for the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

According to Daily Express, the board is due to open the tenders for the media rights for the upcoming edition of the league on Friday.

The board had formally requested the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led government to allow entertainment channels to take part in the bidding process in order to get more profit. However, they haven’t received any response yet in this regard.

If the PCB fails to receive positive response from the government in time, the board will open the tenders, where only sports channels will be allowed to take part in the bidding.

The report also suggests that a firm has valued $40 million for the broadcasting rights of the league.

However, due to uncertainty surrounding the league, people working within the board believe that the actual deal will worth far less than the $40mn valuation.

As an alternative option, the board is keen to initially sign a year-long contract for the media rights if they failed to get the desired amount.

The report further stated that authorities within the board believe the decision to sign just one-year broadcasting right will give time to the PCB to receive permission from the government, which will allow entertainment channels to take part in the bidding process from 2020 onwards — subsequently increasing the broadcasting deal value.
