Former Pakistan wicket-keeper slams Gary Kirsten's remarks on PCB report

Former Pakistan wicket-keeper Atiq-uz-Zaman has criticized Gary Kirsten, Pakistan's white-ball coach, following Kirsten's recent submission of a comprehensive report to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

In an interview with a local sports platform, Atiq did not hold back in his assessment of Kirsten's actions.

"Gary Kirsten came in and started complaining already. If you had the leadership skills, why are you complaining to the board about it? You should have resolved it while you were there. So, fingers crossed, I hope they do well, but I don't see things getting fixed quickly," Atiq said.

Previously, Kirsten, a respected figure in international cricket coaching, forwarded his confidential report to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, detailing the shortcomings that led to Pakistan's disappointing performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the USA and West Indies.

The report is said to thoroughly analyse the team's underwhelming campaign, pinpointing several critical areas of concern. Key areas highlighted include fitness levels, discipline issues, and game awareness among the players.

The PCB is preparing for significant changes in the Pakistan Cricket setup, starting with restructuring the selection committee. Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq were no longer part of the committee.

The newly formed committee has decided to keep Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq on board while appointing new coaches for both red-ball and white-ball formats, Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, alongside both the captains.

Additionally, further changes are anticipated, including a mandatory rigorous fitness assessment for every player every three months.

Domestic cricket participation has also been made compulsory, with the selection committee responsible for overseeing this meticulous process.
