Former Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf calls on Indian government to change stance towards cricket

Former Prime Minister and senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf urged the Indian government to shift its stance and embrace a more positive approach towards cricket. Ashraf emphasized that the world is evolving, and it’s time for India to let cricket be a bridge between nations rather than fueling tensions.

He called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) not to let the Champions Trophy become a casualty of stubbornness or personal egos.

"Cricket should remain a game, not be turned into a battleground between India and Pakistan," he stated. He urged leaders on both sides to protect the sport from political interference and emphasized that "leadership from both nations must come forward to shield cricket from political pollution."

Ashraf further pointed out that Indian cricketers are eager to play in Pakistan but feel constrained by their government. He said, "The Indian government can send a positive message to the world by allowing their cricket team to visit Pakistan."

Referring to recent diplomatic engagements, Ashraf urged both countries to build upon the spirit shown during the SCO summit, where India’s foreign minister attended, as a foundation for peaceful engagement in sports and beyond.
