Hridoy says lbw call could've altered Bangladesh's game versus South Africa

Towhid Hridoy, a key player in Bangladesh's middle order, expressed his belief that a pivotal leg before wicket (LBW) decision during their T20 World Cup 2024 encounter against South Africa had the potential to alter the course of the game in their favor.

In a crucial juncture of the match, Bangladesh found themselves requiring 27 runs from four overs, with Mahmudullah facing South Africa's Ottneil Baartman.

The situation intensified when, on the second ball of the over, the ball brushed against Mahmudullah's pad and raced to the boundary for a four. Initially, the on-field umpire adjudged Mahmudullah out LBW, favoring the Proteas.

However, Bangladesh opted for a review through the Decision Review System (DRS), which ultimately reversed the decision.

Despite this, the four runs were not counted, as per the match regulations, considering the ball was declared dead. Consequently, Bangladesh fell short by a mere four runs, ultimately losing the match.

Hridoy stated that the decision was tough on them and suggested that such rulings should be revisited for the sake of fairness.

"To be honest that was not a good call for us in such a tight match. In my point of view, the umpire gave the out but it was pretty hard on us. Those four runs could have changed the match scenario. But I don't have to say anything about that," Hridoy said at the press conference after the match.

He acknowledged that umpires are human and can make mistakes, highlighting the importance of scrutinizing close calls, especially in low-scoring matches.

"The laws are not in my hands. In that time those four runs were really important. Umpires can make a call and they are human too and can make mistakes," he said.

"They also didn't give wides which were wides on a few occasions. In this kind of a venue where low-scoring matches are taking place, one or two runs are a big thing. I think those four runs or two wides are close calls and I was given out on umpire's call and there are room for improvements," he added.
