ICC launches investigation into suspicious activities in Zim Afro T10

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched an investigation into alleged suspicious activities involving certain cricketers during the recently concluded Zim Afro T10 tournament.

The ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit is actively questioning players and officials as part of this inquiry to ensure the integrity of the sport.

The second edition of the Zim Afro T10 was held in Harare from September 21 to 29, with the Joburg Bangla Tigers emerging as champions. Several Pakistani cricketers and officials participated in the event. The ICC's focus is on the match between the Durban Wolves and the Harare Bolts, played on September 26.

Particular attention has been directed towards the sixth over of the match, bowled by Kashif Dawood, an international cricketer from the UAE with ties to Pakistan. In a remarkable sequence of 14 deliveries, a total of 20 runs were scored, including 7 wides and 2 no-balls. The unusual scoring patterns during this over have prompted scrutiny from the ICC.

Additionally, the match featured Afghan pacer Dawlat Zadran, who conceded 23 runs in the ninth over, which was also characterized by a high number of extras, specifically 8 wides.

Pakistani Test spinner Yasir Shah, also bowled just one over in the match and his over included three wides and three sixes, resulting in a total of 30 runs.

Following the match, the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit began inquiries, prompting the owner of one team to abruptly leave for his home country without meeting with investigators. The unit also confiscated the mobile phone of a suspected player.

The team officials faced questions regarding the bowler who attributed fitness issues to his underwhelming performance. However, the ICC upheld its policy of refraining from commenting on ongoing anti-corruption investigations.

The investigation into the Zim Afro T10 raises serious concerns about the integrity of the tournament and the potential involvement of players in suspicious activities.
