IND vs NZ: Five batters score duck as India posts lowest home Test total against New Zealand

The First Test of New Zealand's tour of India has taken a dramatic turn, as Team India faces a challenging situation after being bowled out for just 46 runs in their first innings during the rain-affected match in Bengaluru.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, India's batting lineup faced an uphill battle against a disciplined New Zealand bowling attack. The conditions, favoring swing and seam movement, proved to be a nightmare for the Indian batsmen, who struggled to settle in against relentless bowling.

The day was particularly harsh for five Indian batsmen who returned to the pavilion without scoring. Captain Rohit Sharma endured a frustrating outing, bowled by Tim Southee for just 2 runs off 16 balls. Star batsman Virat Kohli's struggles continued, as he was dismissed for a duck after facing 9 deliveries, caught by Glenn Phillips off the bowling of William O'Rourke.

Ravichandran Ashwin also had a forgettable innings, falling victim to the Kiwi bowlers without scoring. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan added only 3 runs to the total before being caught by Devon Conway off Matt Henry's bowling. The woes escalated as KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja both recorded ducks, caught off the bowling of Henry and O'Rourke, respectively, with Rahul's dismissal coming after just 6 balls.

The top scorer for India was wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who managed to contribute a valiant 20 runs off 49 balls before being caught by Tom Latham off Henry's bowling. However, his efforts were not enough to salvage the innings as India succumbed to a total of just 46 runs.

On the other side, New Zealand's bowlers showcased exceptional skill and control, with Matt Henry leading the attack by claiming four wickets for just 13 runs in 11 overs. Tim Southee added another wicket to his tally while conceding only 8 runs in 6 overs, and William O'Rourke complemented their efforts with three wickets for 18 runs in 9.1 overs.

The day’s play was marred by rain, with Day 1 being called off entirely. When play resumed on Day 2, New Zealand capitalized on India's misfortunes, bowling them out for their lowest-ever Test total on home soil. India's previous record for the lowest home Test total was 75 against the West Indies in New Delhi back in 1987, while their overall lowest was 36 against Australia in a pink-ball Test in Adelaide in 2020.
