South Africa's fast bowler Gerald Coetzee will miss the second Test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming series against Pakistan due to a groin injury. Coetzee, who hurt his right groin while bowling in the Durban Test, is expected to be out for up to six weeks. Scans confirmed a muscle strain, and as a result, he will not be part of the squad for the Sri Lanka Test and the all-format series against Pakistan.
Coetzee had bowled just a few overs on day four of the Durban Test, before feeling discomfort and speaking to coach Shukri Conrad at lunch. After receiving treatment, he tried to bowl again but was unable to continue for long. He did manage to take a key wicket, dismissing Dinesh Chandimal with a caught-and-bowled after lunch.
Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut earlier this year against the West Indies, has been called up to replace Coetzee in the squad. His inclusion adds to South Africa’s growing injury problems, with Wiaan Mulder also unavailable due to a fractured finger.
The South African team is already missing other key players, including Nandre Burger, who is out for the season with a lower back stress fracture, and Lungi Ngidi, who won’t return until January. However, Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, who were part of the Durban Test, are fit and will play in the second Test at St George's Park, which begins on December 5.
After the Sri Lanka Test, South Africa will host Pakistan for three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests.
