Javed tips Pakistan to complete series sweep against Australia

Former fast-bowler Aaqib Javed believes Pakistan have a great opportunity to complete a clean sweep against the struggling Australia side in the ongoing T20I series.

The Men in Green registered a comprehensive 66-run win in the series opener in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Javed — who was part of the Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup winning side — is of the opinion the home side can easily complete a series sweep if they won’t lose their focus.

“Pakistan have a golden chance for a clean sweep in the T20I series,” said Javed while speaking to media in Lahore. “They won’t get a better opportunity to accomplish something like this. The team should put in the hard yards and focus more on the upcoming matches.”

He added that conditions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and absence of some of the star players have made Australia’s task a whole lot difficult.

“I’m disappointed that the visitors have not learned anything from their mistakes in the Test series,” he said. “Australian team is struggling to cope with Asian conditions and Pakistan’s performance in the first match would have supplemented their issues. The absence of David Warner and Steve Smith is also hampering their performance.”

But Javed, who has played 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for the Green Caps, also believes the team must not get complacent after a thumping win on Wednesday.

“Pakistan have the tendency to become complacent after winning a match comprehensively but they must not repeat this mistake,” he said. “The batsmen played some irresponsible shots in the first T2OI and only Babar Azam played with some authority.”

Javed also appreciated Imad Wasim — who bagged player-of-the-match award in the first T20I in Abu Dhabi — and touted him as one of the best T20I bowlers in the world.

“I am glad to see Imad back in the side and performing well and I’m sure that he will continue to trouble the Aussies in the remaining matches of the series as well,” he said. “His performance in the first T20I proved that he is one of the best T20I bowlers in the world.”
