Shehzar Mohammad and Waleed Ahmed — sons of former Pakistan cricketers Shoaib Mohammad and Tauseef Ahmed respectively — are ambitious about representing Pakistan in international cricket in the future.

While talking in an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Shehzar said: “Surely, I’m definitely looking forward to represent Pakistan in Test cricket. One thing that is in my control right now is to perform and that is what I’m aiming at right now.”

Shehzar also spoke about his double century in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy this season which brought him in the limelight.

“It felt great. I was out on 95 just before that innings, so I wanted to continue this time. When I reached the landmark of 200 runs, I didn’t realise that this was achieved by my father and grandfather as well [in domestic cricket],” he said.

While talking about his grandfather and legendary Pakistan batsman Hanif Mohammad, Shehzar said: “He used to teach me to play with a free mind. We used to have discussion throughout our time together. My grandfather was like a friend to me. We had long discussion on technique and he always told me to play on merit.”

Speaking about his father Shoaib Mohammad — who played 45 Tests for Pakistan — he said: “My dad had a great technique and mindset. Now things in cricket have changed because cricket is quite fast now. But Test cricket is still a bit similar. Initially my dad did not want me to keep wickets but after watching me at the trials he was convinced that I should.”

Shehzar also spoke about the advice given by current Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed, after he returned to Pakistan from USA.

“When I stated playing cricket here in Pakistan, Sarfraz Ahmed told me to rote the strike as much as I can. He said this will help me build my innings and chances of scoring will also increase,” he said.

Meanwhile Tauseef Ahmed’s son and 26-year-old off-spinner Waleed Ahmed said that his idol in cricket is his father while also expressing his desire to represent Pakistan in the future.

“My father is my idol in cricket,” he said. “I am trying my best in the field and hopefully I will represent Pakistan at the national level like my father one day.”

Waleed also revealed that his bowling action is somewhat similar to that of his father.

“My father is my idol and my bowling action, although I have not seen much of him, also resembles my father’s,” he said.

Despite his main area of expertise being spin bowling, Waleed said that he is keen on improving his batting too.

“I’m not putting in the hard yards in solely my bowling as I’m keen on improving my batting as well,” he said.

Speaking about his aspirations of joining a department in first-class cricket, he said: “Currently I am playing for Omar Associates in grade two cricket but for now I have not taken a decision about changing department for first-class cricket.”
