Martin Guptill overtakes Rohit Sharma to become top-scorer in T20Is

New Zealand's opening batsman Martin Guptill has surpassed India's Rohit Sharma to become the highest run-scorer in T20Is.

The flamboyant batsman achieved this feat during the first T20I between England and Scotland in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

Martin Guptill scored a 31-ball 40 as the Black Caps posted a huge target of 225/5 batting first. In response, Scotland were restricted to 157/8 with Ish Sodhi claiming four wickets whereas Mitchell Satner sent two batters back to the pavilion.

Here are the current top-five run-scorers in T20I cricket:

  1. Martin Guptill — 3,399
  2. Rohit Sharma — 3,379
  3. Virat Kohli — 3,308
  4. Paul Stirling — 2,894
  5. Aaron Finch — 2,855

Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma surpassed his countryman Virat Kohli to become the leading run-scorer. However, his record has now been snatched by the Kiwi batsman Guptill and now has 20 more runs than the Indian captain.

It is worth mentioning that Indian batter Virat Kohli was the first one to cross the 3,000-run mark in T20Is. However, his form has taken a significant hit in recent times which has hurt his ability to score runs as quickly as he used to.
