Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has raised objections regarding the process of team selection for the upcoming T20 World Cup, leading to a deferral of the squad announcement.
The team management, currently in England, had sent a list of potential squad members to the PCB Chairman for approval. However, Naqvi took immediate notice of the procedure and demanded an explanation.
Naqvi's primary concern centers around the lack of comprehensive consultation within the selection committee. He emphasized that decisions should not rely solely on the opinions of the selectors, coach, and captain accompanying the squad. Instead, Naqvi insisted that the entire seven-member selection committee must participate in the decision-making process through mutual consultation and consensus.
At present, two selectors, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Yousuf are with the team in England. These two, in consultation with the captain and head coach, selected the team and sent the list for approval.
Naqvi objected, questioning when the selection committee meeting was held and where the meeting minutes are. He pointed out that the opinions of Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq, Bilal Afzal, and data analyst Hassan Cheema, who are in Pakistan, were not included.
Naqvi stressed that the full seven-member selection committee should convene, consider everyone's input, and then finalize and announce the team.
PCB sources have confirmed the immediate halt to the squad announcement, underscoring the Chairman's view that every selector's opinion is vital. The selection process must be fully completed before any names are made public. Consequently, the Board will now announce the finalized squad after incorporating the opinions of all selectors by this evening, around 6 or 7 PM.
Sources close to the situation clarified that Naqvi did not have issues with the specific names on the proposed list. His objection was strictly about the incomplete selection process. He reiterated that a thorough and consultative approach is necessary to ensure a balanced and well-considered team selection.
It is worth noting that the selection committee, comprises of seven members, includes former national players Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq, and Asad Shafiq. The captain and coach of the national men's team are also part of this committee.
