Sri Lanka secured a nail-biting victory and defeated Pakistan by two wickets in the Super 4 clash of the 2023 Asia Cup on Thursday.
While there were numerous shortcomings from Babar and co., one person who's been under strict scrutiny the entire tournament is all-rounder Shadab Khan.
Shadab has been truly off-color lately, and against Sri Lanka, he was hammered for 55 runs where he bagged only one wicket at an economy of 6.11 in his allotted nine overs.
During the post-match presser, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam acknowledged Shadab's effective bowling but expressed concern over the lack of wickets.
"Shadab is bowling very well, but he's unfortunately not taking wickets, so that's why you feel he isn't bowling well. These are our best bowlers - Shadab and Nawaz," Babar said.
Not only Shadab, Pakistan is facing a scarcity of frontline specialist spinner who would provide them an edge in the upcoming ICC Men's ODI World Cup, going to be held in India, which increases the importance of having a specialist spinner tenfold more.
Pakistan cricket fans have been vocal about their preferences for the spin-bowling options in the squad. The discussions have revolved around the inclusion of experienced players Imad Wasim and rising star Abrar Ahmed.
In a poll conducted by Cricket Pakistan, the respondents were asked to vote for their preferred spin-bowling options, and the results highlighted a keen interest in the selection of Imad Wasim and Abrar Ahmed.
The supporters of Imad Wasim are drawn to his vast experience in international cricket, especially in high-pressure tournaments like the World Cup.
Imad's ability to control the game with his spin and contribute with both bat and ball adds weight to his selection argument.
On the other hand, the clamor for the inclusion of Abrar Ahmed is backed by his impressive recent performances in Test cricket.
However, the decision on the final squad composition will rest with the team management, taking into account various factors such as form, experience, and suitability to the prevailing playing conditions - it indeed is clear that Pakistan fans have shown their inclination towards potential picks including Imad and Abrar instead of Shadab.
