Pakistan won’t let down fans during 2019 World Cup: Afridi

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi believes that the Men in Green will perform well during the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.

Afridi — who was the captain of Pakistan side during the 2011 World Cup in India — feels that the team has the tools to succeed in England.

"As the Champions Trophy last year proved, I feel that Pakistan are more than capable of performing well at next year's World Cup. I think they will do well and not let their fans down," said Afridi while talking in an interview with Sky Sports.

He added that the players will have to cope with the different conditions adequately, in order to prevail.

"The conditions will be totally different to what Pakistani players are used to at home or in UAE," he said. "Let's see if the Pakistani players can match their performances in the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi to England.”

The Cricket World Cup 2019 will be played from May 30 to July 14 with 10 participating teams. The format of the tournament is round-robin with the top four sides qualifying for the semi-finals.

Afridi also backed current Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed as the ideal choice to lead the side in all three formats of the game.

Sarfraz’s captaincy has come under fire since Pakistan’s loss in the recently concluded Test series against New Zealand in United Arab Emirates. He has lost five of his ten Tests as skipper, with four wins and a draw.

"I feel that the Pakistan team at the moment overall is doing well in all formats and Ahmed is doing a wonderful job leading the team which is not an easy task at all," he said. "The bowling is looking strong, the batting continues to improve, and the fielding has shown a huge improvement in recent times."

The Pakistan side is currently in South Africa to play three Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is — with the first Test starting in Centurion on December 26.
