PCB chairman gives update about Pakistan head coach appointment

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, provided an update on the appointment of the new head coach, stating that the decision will be made within the next week to ten days.

Given the impending T20 World Cup, there is a sense of urgency in finalizing the coaching staff. Naqvi emphasized that the PCB is committed to selecting the most suitable candidate, whether they are from Pakistan or abroad, to lead the team.

Speaking to reporters at the National Bank Stadium during the HBL PSL final between Multan Sultans and Islamabad United, Naqvi assured that the appointment process is underway.

“I assure you that we will appoint the head coach within the next one week or ten days,” Naqvi said.

However, he refrained from divulging specific details about the new coach, highlighting that previous leaks of false information led to complications, even causing potential candidates like Australia's Shane Watson to withdraw from consideration.

"We were also in talks with Shane Watson and one reason for him not accepting the offer was because so many things leaked out in the media most of which were not correct,” Naqvi said.

Naqvi revealed plans for Pakistan's top cricketers to attend a boot camp in Abbottabad starting March 25, expressing his desire for them to be accompanied by the newly appointed coach.

Furthermore, he hinted at restructuring the PCB, acknowledging concerns that its current size may be unsustainable.

When questioned about potential changes within the organization, Naqvi noted the stark contrast between the substantial PCB workforce of 900 and the team of just 11 players. He suggested that adjustments would be necessary to ensure the PCB's financial stability.

“There are 900 people (working for the PCB) to manage 11 players” Naqvi said.
