PM Shehbaz Sharif backs PCB’s call for equality in Champions Trophy 2025 hosting plan

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed full confidence in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi’s handling of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Prime Minister met with Naqvi to discuss updates on the prestigious tournament, which Pakistan is set to host in February-March 2025.

During the meeting, Naqvi briefed PM Shehbaz about the progress and challenges surrounding the event. The Prime Minister appreciated Naqvi’s strong stance on ensuring the event is hosted successfully.

"Your stance on the Champions Trophy is the voice of every Pakistani," PM Shehbaz said.

He emphasized the importance of national pride, adding, "Pakistan’s honor comes first, and everything else follows."

Naqvi reassured the Prime Minister that the PCB is ready to host the event. "The PCB is fully prepared to host the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan," he stated, expressing hope for a positive outcome.

Despite Pakistan’s preparations, discussions about hosting have faced delays due to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) lack of response to PCB’s proposed “fusion formula.” This formula suggests that India and Pakistan would not play in each other’s countries for ICC events over the next three years.

The ICC board meeting scheduled for December 7, 2024, was postponed again due to the BCCI’s silence. Insiders say the PCB has demanded equality and a written guarantee from the ICC to ensure the hybrid hosting model is implemented without issues.

Indian media reports claim that the Champions Trophy could be co-hosted by Pakistan and the UAE, with India’s matches taking place in Dubai. However, the BCCI has not made any official statement.

The PCB has insisted on a written assurance from the ICC, stating, “Everything must be documented to avoid future complications.” This guarantee is expected to be part of the host agreement.

Naqvi remains optimistic about a resolution. "InshaAllah, good news regarding the Champions Trophy will come soon," he said.
