Despite being in exceptional form, Shaheen Shah Afridi was not included in Pakistan’s Test squad for the series against South Africa. Afridi had delivered a stellar performance in the preceding ODI series, taking the highest number of wickets (7) and playing a pivotal role in Pakistan’s success.
According to sources, prior to the squad announcement, a selector reportedly called Shaheen and instructed him to participate in a four-day match. Due to certain reasons, Afridi was unable to comply. This was interpreted as "disobedience," leading to his exclusion from the Test squad. Interestingly, a similar directive was given to Babar Azam, who also did not follow it but was still included in the team.
Sources suggest that a particular selector’s authoritative behavior has created dissatisfaction among players. The selector, who recently retired, allegedly maintains a commanding attitude even toward former teammates.
Close sources reveal that Afridi remains committed to playing red-ball cricket and was deeply disappointed by his omission from the South Africa Test squad. After the ODI series, before returning home, Afridi reportedly offered to stay for the Test matches if the team management desired, but no one took the initiative to retain him.
The absence of a left-arm pacer was felt in the Centurion Test against South Africa. Even Mir Hamza, another left-arm fast bowler, was not included among the four selected pacers.
In a surprising turn of events, Afridi was excluded from the Test squad under the pretext of workload management but was granted permission to participate in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He will represent Fortune Barishal in the BPL, starting December 30, with an NOC valid until January 15. Afridi is expected to play five matches during the tournament.
