Shaheen Afridi to pocket significant payment despite sitting out 'The Hundred' 2024

Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has opted out of participating in The Hundred 2024 despite being re-signed by Welsh Fire, a decision influenced by family commitments, as reported by The Telegraph on Monday.

Afridi, who was set to earn £100,000 for his involvement, will still receive £5,000 as part of his contract, allocated for image rights, even though he will not play in the tournament. This arrangement allows players to retain this portion of their earnings regardless of their participation.

The 24-year-old's withdrawal means Welsh Fire loses one of their valuable £100,000 slots for the competition. However, Afridi faces no repercussions and remains eligible for future drafts.

Instead of The Hundred, Afridi has committed to playing in the Global T20 Canada league, scheduled from July 25 to August 11, alongside six other Pakistani players. The shorter duration of this league allows Afridi more time with his family, a factor cited by Telegraph Sport.
