Should’ve bowled 7th over: Sarfaraz, Amir recall Champions Trophy triumph

Fakhar Zaman and Mohammad Amir shone as Pakistan defied the odds to overwhelm arch-rivals India by 180 runs and pull off a major upset in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval — on this day in 2017.

Pakistan had come into the tournament as the lowest-ranked team and lost heavily to India in their opening group match but they beat South Africa and Sri Lanka to make the semi-finals where they knocked out hosts England.

The winning-captain Sarfaraz Ahmed posted a video of his son on Twitter, recalling the historic day and naming the top performers.

"Abdullah is glad and fortunate to be the part of one of the greatest days of our life as he recalls it after watching the final of #ChampionsTrophh2017 for the 5th time," Sarfaraz tweeted.

One of the chief architects of the win, Amir, also posted a message on Twitter, terming it as one the best days of his life.

"One of the best day of my life champion trophy final 2017 ALHUMDULILAH," Amir tweeted.

Sarfaraz then got into a fun interaction with Amir and said that the left-arm pacer should have bowled another over in his first spell.

Pakistan head coach at the time, Mickey Arthur also praised Amir for his brilliant spell.

"What an incredible spell of bowling," Arthur wrote.

The highest wicket-taker of the tournament, Hasan Ali, fondly remembered being presented with the golden ball by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.

"Presented with these awards by legends Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly was amazing moment for me. Great memories,"Hasan tweeted.

Other members of the squad also posted their messages on Twitter, celebrating the iconic victory.
