Cricket South Africa confirms eight venues for 2027 Cricket World Cup

In a major announcement, Cricket South Africa confirmed that eight venues across South Africa will host the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The decision, detailed by CSA Chief Executive Pholetsi Moseki, follows what has been described as a “scientific” selection process focusing on logistical considerations such as airport proximity and hotel availability.

The prestigious tournament is set to see matches not only in South Africa but also in co-hosting countries Zimbabwe and Namibia, enhancing the regional impact of the event. South Africa's experienced venues, familiar from the 2003 World Cup, include Johannesburg’s Wanderers, SuperSport Park in Centurion, Cape Town’s Newlands, Kingsmead in Durban, and St George's Park in Gqeberha. They will be complemented by matches at Bloemfontein’s Mangaung Oval, Boland Park in Paarl, and Buffalo Park in East London.

Notably absent from the list this time are Benoni, Potchefstroom, and Kimberley, which were part of the 2003 lineup. The selection process this year has prioritized facilities and infrastructures that can best accommodate the expected influx of international fans and media.

Scheduled for October and November 2027, the tournament promises to be a high-profile event, showcasing not only the best of international cricket but also the vibrant culture and hospitality of Southern Africa.

Venue Overview:

  • Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg: South Africa’s premier venue boasting a capacity of approximately 30,000. It hosted the finals of the 2003 World Cup, the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup, and a semi-final of the 2009 Champions Trophy.
  • Newlands, Cape Town: A picturesque ground with Table Mountain as its backdrop, Newlands has hosted more Test matches (60) than any other South African venue. It was the setting for the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup final and the semi-final of the 2007 T20 World Cup.
  • SuperSport Park, Centurion: This purpose-built stadium located outside Pretoria was the venue for the 2009 Champions Trophy final.
  • Kingsmead, Durban: A semi-final venue for both the 2003 World Cup and the 2007 T20 World Cup.
  • St George's Park, Gqeberha: South Africa's oldest Test ground, which hosted a semi-final during the 2003 World Cup.
  • Boland Park, Paarl: Situated in the picturesque Cape Winelands, Boland Park is also a center for a team in the SA20 franchise competition. It hosted three matches during the 2003 World Cup.
  • Springbok Park, Bloemfontein: Bloemfontein has seen five Test matches and was a Super Six venue during the 2003 World Cup.
  • Buffalo Park, East London: Though less frequently used for men's international matches in recent times, Buffalo Park hosted one Test match and served as a Super Six venue during the 2003 World Cup.
