Spot-fixing scandal: Umar Akmal summoned by PCB

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has summoned right-handed batsman Umar Akmal after his footage emerged in Al Jazeera’s latest documentary regarding spot-fixing.

According to Daily Express, the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit has contacted Akmal and asked him to appear before the tribunal as soon as possible.

PCB’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Subhan Ahmed said while talking to media: “The documentary features Akmal. He can be seen hanging out with the fixer Aneel Munawar. So that is why we are investigating him so we can handle the matter correctly.”

Ahmed added that the PCB will go to the root of the matters before implicating Akmal of anything.

“We have zero tolerance policy against fixing, so we can’t let it go,” said Ahmed. “However, a picture is not enough to prove the he has done something wrong which is why we have decided to call Akmal and ask him some questions.”

The 28-year-old is also under investigation by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his comments about fixing offers.

Commenting on that, the PCB COO said: “The board is keeping an eye on the ongoing investigation by the cricket’s regulatory authority and we will wait until ICC reach on its conclusion.”

He also said that the PCB is in continuous contact with the ICC and also asked them to provide the details on the documentary so that we can reach the bottom of the fixing saga.

“We are in contact with ICC continuously and also asked them to provide whatever evidences or details they have regarding this fixing saga so we can reach the bottom of this mystery,” he said.
