Sri Lanka ends 27-year drought with ODI series win over India

Sri Lanka secured a momentous series victory over India, defeating them by 110 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium. This win clinched the three-match ODI series 2-0, with the first game ending in a tie and a 32-run victory in the second match, largely due to spinner Jeffrey Vandersay’s brilliant performance.

Chasing a target of 249, India’s batting lineup faltered, managing only 138 runs in 26.1 overs, marking Sri Lanka’s first ODI series win against India in 27 years. The last bilateral series win came in August 1997.

Rohit Sharma, India's skipper, was the top scorer with 35 runs off 20 balls. Star batsman Virat Kohli, however, could not anchor the innings, departing after a quick 20 runs off 18 balls. Their dismissals sparked a middle-order collapse, with Rishabh Pant (6), Shreyas Iyer (8), and Axar Patel (2) succumbing to Sri Lanka’s potent spin attack.

Washington Sundar showed some resistance, scoring 30 runs off 25 balls, but his dismissal left India reeling at 138 for nine in 26 overs. Kuldeep Yadav’s fall on the first ball of the 27th over sealed the historic win for Sri Lanka.

Dunith Wellalage was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming five wickets, while Jeffrey Vandersay added two more to his tally.

Earlier, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 248 for seven in their 50 overs.

Openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando set a solid foundation with an 89-run partnership in 19.4 overs. Nissanka scored 45 off 65 balls, while Fernando narrowly missed a century, contributing 96 runs off 102 deliveries.

Kusal Mendis added a crucial 59 runs, and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with 23 runs, helping Sri Lanka reach a defendable total.
