Sri Lanka has officially announced its 15-member squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, with Chamari Athapaththu continuing as captain. Athapaththu, an inspiring leader and the highest run-getter for Sri Lanka in T20 cricket, will guide a team similar to the one that achieved their first Women’s Asia Cup title in July. The squad also includes Inoka Ranaweera, a left-arm spinner with over 12 years of experience, who last played for Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.
Over the past 18 months, Sri Lanka has enjoyed significant success, achieving historic series wins against England and South Africa for the first time in any format. They also went unbeaten in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup Qualifier 2024.
While Athapaththu is expected to perform well, other players have also shown they can deliver match-winning performances. Kavisha Dilhari was a standout in the Asia Cup, taking nine wickets at an average of 12.33, making her the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. In the batting lineup, Vishmi Gunaratne and Harshitha Madhavi have provided solid support to Athapaththu, each scoring centuries during the recent tour of Ireland.
Sri Lanka is placed in Group A of the tournament, competing against Australia, India, New Zealand, and Pakistan. They will kick off their campaign on 3 October against Pakistan, aiming to build on their recent successes and make a mark in the World Cup.
