New Zealand batsman Leo Carter hit six sixes in an over off left-arm spinner Anton Devcich to help his side Canterbury Kings chase a mammoth target of 220 runs in a Super Smash Twenty20 match against Northern Districts in Christchurch on Sunday.

Kings still needed 116 runs from 58 balls, when Carter came to the crease. The 25-year-old’s blistering 70-run knock from 29 balls, which included seven sixes and three fours, ensured a seven-wicket win for the chasing side and led to the highest successful Twenty20 chase in New Zealand history.

The left-hander also registered his name in the record books as he became the first Kiwi batsman and seventh overall to hit six sixes in an over in professional cricket.

The 25-year-old left-hander was surprised with his own effort and believes the short boundaries helped him achieve the milestone.

"I basically just stepped across and swung as hard as I could," Carter said to Sky. "I'm not so sure I got many off the middle, but pretty short boundary there, so they just carried over, I was pretty thankful for that.”

"We needed a big over at that time - I was lucky enough to get a few over there," he added.

Northern Districts had earlier made 219-7 from their 20 overs with right-hand batsman Tim Seifert scoring 74 off 36 balls.
