Yasir Shah’s spell reminded me of Shane Warne: Craig McMillan

New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan has said that Pakistan leg-spinner Yasir Shah’s magical spell in Dubai Test showed glimpses of former Australia legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne.

According to ESPNcricinfo, McMillan hailed Shah’s performance and was especially impressed with his bowling variety.

"The drop and the drift that he was able to generate, especially in that first innings, in that spell, was as good as I've seen, and that was one of the things that made Shane Warne so difficult to face, that drift, and we saw that with a couple of dismissals that he bowled - the likes of the Taylor dismissal, that late drop and drift,” said McMillian.

Yasir Shah claimed his career-best figures of eight wickets for 41 runs in the first innings which helped Pakistan bowl out New Zealand for just 90 in the first innings of the second Test in Dubai.

He picked up six wickets in the second innings to level 36-year-old record of taking 14wickets in a Test — set by legendary Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan.

The Kiwi batting coach urged his batmen to come up with an adequate plan against the leg-spinner, ahead of the series decider against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

"From a batting point of view you just have to be so precise and clear with your batting plan, especially against Yasir Shah who was outstanding," he said. "He's going to test you early on, he's going to test that defence, so your defence has to be so tight, has to be so spot on, because if you make a mistake it's pretty vital over here."

McMillan — who represented New Zealand in 55 Tests, 197 One-Day Internationals (ODI) and eight T20Is — also said the performances of second-innings half-centurions Tom Latham, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls showed how the leg-spinner can be tackled.

“We saw, certainly in that second innings, some improvement, from the likes of Taylor and Nicholls and Latham, who batted a long time out there and showed what was possible,” he said. “It didn't happen in the first innings - it would have been a very different Test match if it had happened - but the guys are learning. We need to learn a bit quicker and get it right, I guess, in that first innings of the third Test."

The third Test between the two side is scheduled to begin on December 3 in Abu Dhabi.
