'You belong here', Ashwin congratulates Bumrah for claiming top spot in Test rankings

Jasprit Bumrah is back in top form after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, shining in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. In the first Test, played on September 19, Bumrah claimed five wickets, and in the second Test, he picked up six more, helping India win the series 2-0.

This incredible performance pushed Bumrah to the top of the ICC Test bowler rankings, overtaking teammate Ravichandran Ashwin. Bumrah now holds 870 points, narrowly surpassing Ashwin’s 869 points. Ashwin was quick to congratulate Bumrah, sharing an Instagram story saying that the pacer deserves the No. 1 spot.

"You belong here," Ashwin wrote

Apart from his Test achievements, Bumrah is also in the Top 10 of the ODI bowlers’ rankings, sitting at eighth place with 645 points.

Ashwin, meanwhile, had his own standout moments in the series. Playing in his hometown of Chennai, Ashwin shone in the first Test with both bat and ball, scoring a century in the first innings and taking six wickets in the second. His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

Speaking after the first Test, Ashwin reflected on his journey in cricket: “I can't really comment on what sort of impact I have had on this Test match. I had huge shoes to fill, I came in to replace Harbhajan, I used to replicate his action in junior cricket, he was an inspiration to me. Constantly people have doubted if I could deliver in red-ball as I came from IPL, lots of people have come and helped me."
