Afghanistan beat Pakistan by six wickets in the first T20I to go 1-0 up in the three-match series here at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday evening.

This victory marked Afghanistan's first win over Pakistan in T20Is.

"Pleasure to win as we've always lost against them, with small margins too. Happy for the win, hope to continue the momentum. Wearing Afghanistan colours and leading the team in a win is a proud achievement," Rashid Khan said in post-match ceremony.

Chasing a modest 93 runs to win, the home side chased down the target in 17.5 overs, losing four wickets in the process. Mohammad Nabi was the star performer for Afghanistan, scoring an unbeaten 38 runs to guide his team to victory. Najibullah Zadran remained not out on 17 runs. The pair knitted a 53-run unbroken stand for the fifth wicket after Afghanistan were reeling at 45 for four in the 10th over.

"Congrats to everyone. Was a tough score to chase in these conditions. As a bowling unit, we wanted to keep them under 100. With the bat, I wanted to take responsibility and close the game. Most of the guys in our squad are playing big leagues, some have been here in the UAE for 15 days. So we were set. Thirty-eight on this wicket can feel like a hundred," said Mohammad Nabi.

"Exciting moment for us, happy to finally beat them. Pitch was not easy, we just watched the ball and play naturally. Nabi's experience, our bowling was amazing. Najib also played well. The win will give us momentum and increase our confidence. Beating Pakistan gives us an indication that we are improving and hopefully that continues," said Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Nabi also picked up two wickets and was named the player of the match for his all-round performance.

The second T20I of the series will be played at the same venue on Sunday.
