Afghanistan registered their biggest-ever ODI victory by defeating Zimbabwe by a staggering 232 runs in the second match of the series at Harare Sports Club on Thursday.
This win surpassed Afghanistan's previous record of a 177-run margin against South Africa earlier this year and now ranks as the 22nd-largest win in ODI history.
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, faced their third-heaviest ODI defeat, following losses of 272 runs against South Africa and 242 runs against Pakistan in the past.
After being sent in to bat, Afghanistan's openers dominated Zimbabwe’s bowling attack. Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik put together a 191-run partnership, setting the foundation for a strong total of 286/6 in 50 overs.
Abdul Malik scored a steady 84 runs from 101 balls, including 12 boundaries and one six. His dismissal in the 35th over brought an end to the remarkable stand.
Sediqullah Atal, however, stole the show with his maiden ODI century. He smashed eight fours and four sixes during his 128-ball 104, anchoring Afghanistan’s innings until the 43rd over.
Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi chipped in with an unbeaten 29 off 30 balls, ensuring Afghanistan posted a competitive total.
For Zimbabwe, Newman Nyamhuri was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, while Trevor Gwandu grabbed two.
Chasing 287, Zimbabwe’s batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of Afghanistan’s bowling attack. The home team was bowled out for just 54 runs in 17.3 overs, their joint fourth-lowest total in ODI history.
Sean Williams (16) and Sikandar Raza (19) were the only batters to reach double figures.
Afghanistan’s bowlers, led by a disciplined effort, left no room for recovery. Their ruthless performance sealed the historic win and handed Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
The final match will be played on Sunday, with Afghanistan aiming for a clean sweep.
