Afridi acknowledged the challenges faced by a young player in such conditions but urged patience, highlighting Saim's consistent hard work, even in the nets
In the aftermath of Pakistan's series loss against New Zealand, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi has spoken out about the potential and promise he sees in young talent, particularly praising Saim Ayub.
Shaheen shared his insights in the post-match presser. He emphasized the potential of Saim, expressing confidence that the young cricketer has the ability and hunger to become a significant star for Pakistan. Afridi acknowledged the challenges faced by a young player in such conditions but urged patience, highlighting Saim's consistent hard work, even in the nets.
"Saim can be a very big star. He has the ability and hunger to do well for Pakistan. He always gives his best, even in the nets. In these conditions, it's not always easy for a young kid. We need to give him some time. Azam is the best performer in domestic cricket at #5/6. His average and strike rate is the best in Pakistan at these positions. If we give these players proper opportunities, they can go on to do well for Pakistan," Shaheen said.
Reflecting on Babar Azam's performance, Shaheen acknowledged Babar's excellence in playing three outstanding innings. However he pointed out that finishing a game requires support from the other end. He suggested that if a good batsman had stayed with Babar, Pakistan could have successfully closed out the matches.
"Babar proved how good he is once again and played 3 best innings in 3 matches. Yes he wasn't able to finish the game but to do that, you need some help to take the game deep. If a good batsman stayed with him at the other end then he could have finished the match," he concluded.
It is worth noting that Babar scored three consecutive half-centuries in three matches against New Zealand. Despite that New Zealand easily sealed series with comprehensive win over Pakistan in third T20I on Wednesday.
