He lamented the team’s inability to adapt to Test cricket, pointing out flaws in both technique and temperament
Ahmad Shahzad, Pakistan’s batter, has expressed his disappointment with the national team’s dismal performance in the second test against the West Indies, which resulted in a historic loss on home soil after 34 years.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Shahzad did not hold back in criticizing the players, coaching staff, and overall team management for failing to deliver. He lamented the team’s inability to adapt to Test cricket, pointing out flaws in both technique and temperament.
“Pakistan cricket has reached a new low,” Shahzad said, referencing the team’s struggles against a West Indies side ranked ninth in the world.
“This defeat is a clear indication of the lack of focus and preparation within the team,” he added. He questioned the players’ commitment, suggesting that their attention was more on social media and sponsorship deals than on the game itself.
Shahzad highlighted specific moments from the match, particularly the failure of the batting lineup to capitalize on the bowlers’ efforts in restricting the West Indies to 163 in the first innings. He also criticized the team’s inability to chase a target in the fourth innings, calling it a “collective failure.”
“The pitch didn’t tell you to play reckless shots or edge the ball to the slips,” Shahzad said, addressing the frequent excuses made by players during press conferences.
“It’s not about the conditions, it’s about the mindsets of the players.” He emphasized the need for accountability, urging the captain and senior players to take responsibility for the team’s shortcomings.
Shahzad also raised concerns about the team’s selection process, alleging that deserving players are often overlooked due to favoritism and social media campaigns.
“We need a system that prioritizes performance and consistency, not popularity and social media following,” he said, calling for a revamp of the selection process.
The cricketer’s criticism extended to the leadership within the team, as he questioned the decision-making during crucial moments of the match.
“You have three leaders on the field, and yet, no one seems to take charge,” Shahzad said, referring to captain Shan Masood, Babar Azam, and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.
“Leadership is about taking responsibility when things are tough, and right now, that is lacking,” he added.
Shahzad concluded by urging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to take immediate steps to address the team’s declining performance ahead of the Champions Trophy.
“Without significant changes, we risk falling even further behind,” he warned, stressing that the team must find a way to bounce back and restore its pride in the international arena.
