Pakistan's interim head coach, Aqib Javed, addressed the exclusion of batter Babar Azam, wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, and left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi from the national squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour.

Speaking at a media conference on Tuesday, Javed explained that these decisions were part of a broader strategy to refresh the team and introduce a new style of play.

Javed emphasized the need for a shift in approach, stating that the exclusion of such key players is not permanent but part of a broader vision for the future.

"It can never be a permanent decision just because a cross has been placed here," he said.

"Right now, we feel the need to introduce a younger group of players and change our style of play and mindset," he added.

He pointed out that many teams have opted for separate squads for T20 internationals, with 80-90% of their players different from their main squads. However, Javed acknowledged that some players from the current setup would still be needed.

On the squad composition, Javed explained, "If you look at this squad, once Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman return fully fit, it will form a really strong unit. The goal is to keep a core group of 24-25 players together to ensure they remain within the system before the Asia Cup and World Cup. This way, they approach these tournaments with a set mindset."

Regarding Shaheen Afridi, who had a tough time in the Champions Trophy, Javed explained that a player’s effectiveness in ODI cricket depends on the team's demands. Afridi struggled with crucial spells, especially against New Zealand and India.

"At times in ODI cricket, we assess how effective a player is based on the team’s needs. If a player doesn't meet those, it becomes a concern," Javed said.

He continued, "But players like Haris Rauf and Shaheen are still good bowlers in T20 cricket. They can deliver better results for the team. However, as selectors, it’s our job to make the right decisions at the right time."

Javed also addressed the exclusion of leg-spinner Usama Mir, despite his impressive performances in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and domestic cricket. When asked about Mir's omission, especially when compared to players like Azam Khan, who was selected based on his Caribbean Premier League (CPL) performances, and Khushdil Shah, who was picked for excelling in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Javed provided clarity.

"Team composition plays a key role. If you look at ODIs, many people discussed the lack of spinners, except for India, who played in Dubai's conditions," he explained.

"Typically, teams have seven batsmen, including all-rounders, and four bowlers — three fast bowlers and one spinner. Similarly, for T20s, you need all-rounders," he further added.

Javed then explained that Usama Mir's exclusion was primarily due to fitness concerns.

"We had discussions with Usama about his fitness. When making a comeback, you need to leave no room for doubt," he said.

"For example, we included Sufiyan Muqeem in the T20I squad because he is a left-arm wrist spinner, offering a different angle. Alongside him, we have Abrar Ahmed, who is a mystery spinner and has been performing exceptionally well," he added.

He also stressed the importance of versatility, saying, "If you want to include a wrist spinner, it should be someone who can contribute with the bat in the top seven, ensuring a better balance for the team."
