Sri Lankan cricketer Chamari Athapaththu made a notable start with the Sydney Thunder, contributing significantly to their 42-run victory over the Sydney Sixers in the Women's Big Bash League on Sunday.

As the fourth overseas signing for the Thunder, Athapaththu showcased her versatility with a stellar all-round performance.

Athapaththu played a brisk 52-run knock from 39 balls, showcasing her batting expertise. Impressively, she seamlessly carried her form into the bowling arena, securing three wickets in her four overs and conceding a mere 20 runs.

In a press conference conducted via Zoom, Athapaththu advocated for increased opportunities for talents from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka in WBBL.

“Franchise cricket is not all about money, it's about learning new skills, culture and getting experience. I know many women players from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka who are keen to feature in WBBL due to the standard and pace of cricket over here,” Athapaththu said.

“I would urge franchises to give more South Asian girls an opportunity to shine in WBBL. WBBL is one of the best franchise leagues and I will take this knowledge to the young players of Sri Lanka,” she added.

Athapaththu, who has plans to share her experiences with young players in Sri Lanka, revealed that Cricket Sri Lanka is organizing a T10 Women's league in December this year. The proposed tournament is expected to feature four franchises, adding another dimension to women's cricket in Sri Lanka.
