Australia’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have hit a roadblock as star batter Steve Smith suffered an elbow injury during a Big Bash League (BBL) match.

Reports reveal that Smith injured his right elbow while throwing a ball in a rain-affected game between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder on Friday. Smith has dealt with elbow injuries before and underwent surgery for the same issue in 2019.

The injury has delayed Smith’s travel plans for Australia’s training camp in Dubai, as he consults a specialist for further advice. Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that the 35-year-old batter will now join the camp later this week.

Adding to the team’s concerns, Test captain Pat Cummins is also recovering from an ankle issue. Cummins experienced increased soreness after bowling the most overs in the recent Test series against India. While he has been named in Australia’s preliminary Champions Trophy squad, his availability for the tournament remains uncertain.

"Cummins will seek specialist advice and require physical preparation and recovery," CA stated.

Australia, champions of the 2009 edition, are set to begin their campaign in the eight-team tournament in February, but the injuries to key players pose a challenge to their plans.

Australia's Squad: Pat Cummins (C), Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
