Australia reached the required total with 15 balls to spare, thanks to an excellent partnership between Josh Inglis and Alex Carey
Australia chased down a massive 352-run target to claim a five-wicket victory over England in the fourth match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.
In pursuit of the daunting target, Australia reached the required total with 15 balls to spare, thanks to an excellent partnership between Josh Inglis and Alex Carey. Inglis, who played a crucial role, was the star of the chase, finishing with an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls.
However, the chase didn't start smoothly for the Australians, who lost Travis Head (6) and Steve Smith (5) early, leaving them at 27/2 after just five overs. Despite the early setbacks, Marnus Labuschagne and Matthew Short steadied the innings with a quick 95-run partnership. Labuschagne made 47 off 45 balls, while Short contributed with 63 off 66 balls, hitting nine fours and one six.
England fought back after the pair’s dismissals, but Inglis and Carey turned the tide in Australia’s favour. The pair put together a commanding 146-run stand off 110 balls. Carey scored a valuable 69 off 63 balls, with eight boundaries, before being dismissed by Brydon Carse in the 42nd over.
Inglis, though, remained unshaken and guided Australia to victory, finishing unbeaten on 120. He was also part of a match-changing 74-run partnership with Glenn Maxwell, who contributed a quickfire 32 off 15 balls, including four fours and two sixes.
For England, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Carse, Jofra Archer, and Mark Wood each claimed one wicket, but it wasn’t enough to stop Australia from securing the win.
Earlier, England had posted a total of 351/8 in their 50 overs. A strong partnership between Ben Duckett (165 off 143 balls) and Joe Root (68 off 78 balls) took England to a competitive total. The two added 158 runs for the third wicket, dominating the Australian bowlers. Duckett’s knock was the highlight of England's innings, as he hit 17 fours and three sixes.
Australia’s Ben Dwarshuis was the standout bowler, picking up three wickets for 66 runs in his 10 overs. Adam Zampa and Marnus Labuschagne each took two wickets, while Glenn Maxwell took one.
This victory marks a confidence-boosting win for Australia, as they successfully chased down a massive totat to claim their first victory of Champions Trophy since 2009.
