Former Pakistan cricket captain Azhar Ali has offered his insights into the optimal batting combination for the upcoming England, Ireland tour and the 2024 T20 World Cup scheduled in the USA and West Indies.

In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Azhar emphasized the need for strategic adjustments, particularly in the context of challenging conditions.

"See, this is my own opinion; people may disagree. I think either Babar or Rizwan will have to come down, especially considering the conditions in the West Indies where sometimes you need a quick start with the new ball," Azhar said.

"For tournaments like the T20 World Cup, we need impactful performances in the powerplay as well. One anchor player is fine, but for both of them, taking innings forward is also very important. However, if both players play similarly, you might face difficulties somewhere," he added.

The former skipper further elaborated on the importance of having a balanced lineup, mentioning Saim Ayub's potential contributions.

"In T20, perhaps no player has that much consistency, but sometimes you need impactful performances. For that, you have to utilize a player like Saim Ayub who can also bowl now. So, whether it's Babar or Rizwan opening, they should come down to number three, or if Rizwan can play at 5 or 6," he concluded.

It is worth noting that the tournament will commence on 2 June with co-hosts USA taking on neighbors Canada, while fellow hosts the West Indies will play Papua New Guinea in Guyana on the second day of group play.
