Pakistan's white-ball captain Babar Azam has overtaken Indian batter Virat Kohli's record in T20I cricket during Thursday's World Cup opening clash against the co-hosts USA.

Babar has emerged as the leading run-scorer in short-format cricket, surpassing Virat and Rohit Sharma, who previously had more runs than him.

Most runs in T20I cricket:

  • Babar Azam 4067 (113 innings)
  • Virat Kohli 4038 (110 innings)
  • Rohit Sharma 4026 (144 innings)

Recently, during the four-match T20I series against England, which the men in green lost 2-0, with two games washed out due to rain, the 29-year-old became the first Pakistan batter to score 4,000 runs in T20I cricket.

He also became the only captain to score 2500 T20I runs. Achieving this feat has distinguished him as a top player and a leader who consistently contributes to his team's success.

The 29-year-old is a dominant force with the bat and a formidable captain in the shorter format. Babar is also the only captain with the most wins in T20I cricket.

Most T20I wins as captain:

  • Babar Azam: 46 (81 matches)
  • Brian Masaba: 45 (58)
  • Asghar Afghan: 42 (52)
  • Rohit Sharma: 42 (55)
