Brevis has been called up as cover for Bavuma
Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the first Test match in Bangladesh after scans revealed he has a muscle strain in his left triceps. Aiden Markram will take over as captain for the Test, which is set to begin in Dhaka on October 21.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Bavuma will still travel with the squad to Dhaka on Tuesday. He will continue his recovery under the guidance of the Proteas medical team in preparation for the second Test, scheduled to start in Chattogram on October 29.
Earlier, Nandre Burger was also ruled out of the series due to a lumbar stress reaction. To strengthen the squad, Dewald Brevis and Lungi Ngidi have been added to the team.
Bavuma had previously been ruled out of the third ODI against Ireland on October 6 due to an elbow injury. He had retired hurt during the second ODI on October 4 and did not take the field in that match. Rassie van der Dussen led the South African team in Bavuma's absence, while Markram was rested for the ODI series.
Brevis has been called up as cover for Bavuma. Although he has not yet played a Test match, he has appeared in two T20 internationals and has 12 first-class matches under his belt. His most recent performance was for South Africa A against Sri Lanka A in Benoni, where he scored 49 and 74 runs in a five-wicket loss.
Ngidi, who participated in all three ODIs against Ireland in Abu Dhabi and took two wickets in the first two matches, completes the fast-bowling department alongside Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson, and Wiaan Mulder, the all-rounder.
