Sydney Thunder defeated Perth Scorchers by one run after a fascinating clash in Sydney’s Showground Stadium.

Thunder posted 142-6 in their allotted 20 overs after their captain Shane Watson won the toss and elected to bat first.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler top-scored with 55 runs off 54 balls — an innings which included four fours and a six.

Meanwhile Callum Ferguson 42 runs off 30 deliveries — a brisk innings which included five fours and a six.

For Scorchers slow left-arm spinner Ashton Agar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-27 in his four overs.

Chasing a target of 143 runs, the Scorchers found themselves in real trouble after losing five wickets for just 54 runs on the board.

At this stage Ashton Turner and William Bosisto stitched together an 87-run partnership — largely dominated by Turner’s unbeaten 60 off 36 balls — to get their side close to victory. But despite their efforts, the Scorchers fell short by one run.

For Thunder, leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed claimed two wickets for 22 runs his four overs.

Ferguson was declared the player of the match.
