Josh Hazlewood set to miss the series due to a calf injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India
Australia has received a major setback ahead of their upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, with their star fast bowler Josh Hazlewood set to miss the series due to a calf injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
Hazlewood, who was ruled out of the entire series against India after the injury, played a key role in the earlier part of the series. His replacement, Scott Boland, stepped up and played a crucial role in Australia’s historic 3-1 victory. Hazlewood suffered the injury during the third Test and was unable to bowl in the second innings, which impacted Australia’s chances of winning. India managed to secure a draw in that rain-affected match.
Hazlewood had previously expressed hopes of returning to the Test team for the Sri Lanka tour, but reports now suggest he will miss the entire series. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, selectors have decided not to rush him back into the squad. Even if Hazlewood had recovered, his return might have been difficult due to Australia’s strong depth in fast bowling.
Australia will still have world-class fast bowlers, including Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland. Starc is known for his ability to reverse swing the ball, making him a potent weapon in subcontinent conditions. Meanwhile, Boland impressed with his performances during the recent series against India.
Spin is expected to play a significant role in the series against Sri Lanka. As a result, Australia has included spinners Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann in the touring squad. Nathan Lyon is likely to be joined by either Murphy or Kuhnemann, depending on the opposition and playing conditions.
Australia’s selectors are set to finalize the 16-member Test squad on January 8, with the official announcement expected the following day. Given that Australia has already qualified for the World Test Championship Final, the selectors are being cautious with Hazlewood’s recovery and are reluctant to take any risks.
After the fifth Test against India, Australia confirmed its place in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final, where they will face South Africa in June at Lord's. This will be Australia’s second consecutive appearance in the WTC Final, following their victory in the previous edition.
With his focus now on recovering for future commitments, Hazlewood is eyeing the Champions Trophy, set to begin in February. His experience and skill make him a key player for Australia, and he will be eager to return to action for the prestigious tournament.
