Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are among the senior players who may face exclusion from the squad
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly set to make significant changes to its white-ball squad ahead of the upcoming series against Australia.
Following disappointing performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024, the ECB appears poised to overhaul the squad, potentially leaving out several high-profile players.
According to the media reports, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are among the senior players who may face exclusion from the squad. Both cricketers, who were instrumental in England's 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, have struggled in recent tournaments.
Bairstow's underwhelming form in the ICC events and his recent omission from Test cricket suggest that he might be sidelined. The management could consider alternative options such as Jamie Smith, who has excelled in Test cricket.
Moeen Ali's position is also under scrutiny. His inconsistent performances have led to speculation that he might be dropped to make way for fresh talent. Jacob Bethell, a promising 20-year-old, is expected to receive his debut call-up for the Australia series.
Bethell, who has impressed in List A and T20 formats, could be a key addition to the squad. He has accumulated 339 runs in List A cricket and 731 runs in T20s, along with 22 wickets across white-ball formats.
The fate of Jos Buttler as captain is also uncertain following the team's semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup and the resignation of head coach Matthew Mott. The ECB is yet to decide whether Buttler will continue in his leadership role, especially with the Champions Trophy on the horizon.
Additionally, Liam Livingstone's place in the squad is reportedly under threat. Warwickshire all-rounder Saqib Mahmood is a potential candidate to join the squad, given the ECB's interest in his profile.
England and Australia are set to compete in a three-match T20I and a five-match ODI series, starting from September 11th and running through September 29th.
