Fakhar, who suffered an injury while fielding earlier in the match, had to leave the field for an extended period
Pakistan’s chase against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will begin with Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel opening the innings, as Fakhar Zaman has been forced to delay his batting entry by 20 minutes.
Fakhar, who suffered an injury while fielding earlier in the match, had to leave the field for an extended period. As per ICC regulations, a player who spends significant time off the field must wait an equivalent duration before being allowed to bat.
Despite concerns over his fitness, Fakhar is expected to bat later in the innings. His absence at the top means captain Babar Azam and left-hander Saud Shakeel will step up to open for Pakistan.
Pakistan, hosting its first ICC event since the 1996 ODI World Cup, had earlier won the toss and opted to field first. New Zealand, led by a strong start from Will Young and Devon Conway, posted a competitive total.
With an altered opening combination, Pakistan will look to make a steady start in their pursuit of victory.
